Massage Styles

Acupressure
Therapists: Yoko, Marie, Laura, Hisako, Eliza, Wenonah
A Chinese technique that applies finger pressure to points along the meridians to relieve pain and restore harmony.

Craniosacral Therapy
Therapists: Bill, Sai Mayi, Eliza
Nurtures and supports the nervous system, brain and spinal cord through a series of gentle sustained contacts that release tension, ease pain and allow the body to get in tune with itself. Especially beneficial for chronic pain, post traumatic stress, tinnitus, vertigo and headaches. Patients are fully clothed.

Deep Tissue
Therapists: Yoko, Bill, Sai Mayi, Laura, Kiki, Hisako, Eliza, Kimberly, Taylor, Tank, Wenonah
Works to loosen and lengthen fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles, thus creating more freedom of movement and release of tension. Often combined with other techniques which focus on the muscles to relieve tightness and trigger points. This is an effective technique for repetitive stress syndrome (i.e., carpal tunnel, TMJ), chronic low back, neck and shoulder stress.

Esalen®
Therapists: Bill
A relaxing oil massage, similar to Swedish, with extra emphasis on long strokes that “smooth out the roughness of life.”

Jin Shin Jyutsu
Therapists: Hisako
A Japanese healing art that uses the hands as "jumper cables" to unblock the flow of energy along the pathways, aiding the body's natural healing abilities. Designated points, or "safety energy locks" are held until pulses are synchronized and harmonious. Deep relaxation and peacefulness restore mental and emotional balance. Patient is fully clothed lying face up.

Prenatal
Therapists: Yoko, Sai Mayi, Kiki, Hisako, Laura, Eliza, Wenonah
Especially appropriate after the start of the second trimester. It is a supported, side-lying massage that is comfortable for pregnant women and is designed to reduce edema in extremities, relieve low back discomfort and alleviate aches and pains resulting from the dramatic transitions the body is making during pregnancy. Greatly improves overall sense of well-being and facilitates pregnancy and labor.

Shiatsu
Therapists: Tank, Tatum, Yoko, Kiki, Hisako, Wenonah
Literally means, “finger” (shi) “pressure”(atsu). According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), disease occurs as a result of blocked or stagnant chi (energy). Shiatsu, a Japanese technique, aims to clear blockages and restore balance. A traditional session consists of point work, stretching, joint rotation and percussion. Typically Shiatsu takes place with the client fully clothed.

Sports
Therapists: Laura
Involves a number of modalities -Swedish, deep tissue, joint rotation, stretching, etc., to rehabilitate injuries and reduce the possibility of future injuries from occurring. Essential for all yogis, dancers and athletes.

Swedish
Therapists: Tank, Yoko, Sai Mayi, Laura, Kiki, Hisako, Kimberly, Taylor, Wenonah, Durgasakti
The style most people commonly associate with massage. Typically includes long gliding strokes, kneading and percussion, using soft to deep pressure, depending on the client. Helps to loosen tight muscles and adhesions in fascia that result from tension, injury and chronic stress. Often combined with elements of deep tissue and/or trigger point work.

Tui Na
Therapists: Yoko, Hisako
A Chinese medical massage is used to heal all types of tendon, ligament, musculo-skeletal and joint injuries using acupressure points and energy meridians to facilitate greater mobility and the body's own healing process. Patients are fully clothed.

Zen Shiatsu
Therapists: Laura
A style of shiatsu developed by Shizuto Masunaga, it is a choreography of gentle yet invigorating moves, utilizing rhythmic breathing and stretching, while addressing the body's meridian lines and acupressure points. Emphasis is on one-ness and simplicity. Using yin/yang principles, one hand moves while the other supports and stabilizes. Techniques include palming, forearms, elbows, fingers, thumbs, knees, tiger's palm, and squeezing.

Ayurvedic Mind Counseling
Therapists: Sumanasa
Ayurvedic Mind Counseling is an approach to therapy, which views the mind as a manifestation of energy, inseparable from the body.  Each session will seek to harmonize the client’s energy with the greater cycles of nature by implementing ayurvedic principles, Tantrik transformational practices and talk therapy.  The client will learn techniques to uncover and work with their mind’s energy (and subsequent emotions and behavior) on a moment-to-moment basis, enabling lasting and integrated results.

Private Yoga Therapy

Therapists: Sumanasa
Private Yoga Therapy assists one in deepening their yoga practice and may work on specific imbalances in the body/mind.  During each session Sumanasa will work with the client to custom design a unique sequence of postures, breathing techniques and/or meditation practices that one may take home and practice at their leisure.  This therapy aims to emulate a more classical approach to yoga where students are taught one-on-one in order to meet their individual needs.
